The American Visionaries of the Wanås Foundation
The American Visionaries of the Wanås Foundation is a U.S. not-for-profit organization that encourages the appreciation and enjoyment of contemporary art. In furtherance of its purposes, the organization supports the charitable and educational activities of the Wanås Foundation. The Wanås Foundation, founded in 1987 in Sweden, is a not for profit foundation focused on site-specific installations. The Wanås Foundation produces new work by established as well as emerging artists. Of the 40 permanent installations in the park at Wanås, a majority is created by American artists, including Dan Graham, Ann Hamilton, Jenny Holzer, Maya Lin, Roxy Paine, Martin Puryear, Andrea Ray, Jason Rhoades, and Robert Wilson, among others. In the exhibitions of 1996 as well 2006, the Wanås Foundation showed work only by artists from the United States, most of which were emerging artists.
The exhibition WANÅS 2010 features the well known American artist Roxy Paine from New York City. Impostor, Roxy Paine’s first stainless steel sculpture in his series of dendroids, was made at Wanås in 1999 and is part of the permanent collection of the Wanås Foundation. Ten years later, the artist installed the much acclaimed Maelstrom on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2010, Roxy Paine creates a new 46 feet tall sculpture, Facade/Billboard, in stainless and painted steel, for the Wanås Foundation.
